Each year in February, the foothills of the Snowy Mountains in NSW come alive with the sounds of one of the most exciting and spectacular sports that you might see; RODEO!!

Rodeo is an exhibition of unquestionable grit, determination, fortitude and skill.  It is a sport that has developed from the strong history of the great Australian stockman.  A link with our long lost past where hard working men and women faced every adversity with the typical positive Australian attitude and still had enough energy for a bit of sport at the end of the day.

With a strong history of providing top level entertainment, the Cooma Rodeo is popular with young and old alike.

As if the excitement of bulls, broncs and pretty cowgirls isn’t enough to satisfy rodeo fans, the Cooma Rodeo Committee has even more value for their spectators in 2010!

Two unique features that the Cooma Rural Rodeo will offer fans in 2010 will be the Invitational Charity Barrel Race and the Ray Freebody Memorial Bronc Ride.

Invitational Charity Barrel Race

The Summit Smash Repairs Invitational Charity Barrel Race will see some of the Monaro’s most well known and respected identities go head to head in one of the most graceful sports of rodeo; the barrel race. But, unlike an ordinary barrel race, it will not be the clocks that decide who wins. Instead it will be the cheers of the crowd who determine who is the most popular competitor. In order to ensure victory, each competitor will be encouraged to do anything they feel will earn them the cheers of the crowd.

But there will be no garlands of roses for the winner of the Summit Smash Repairs Invitational Barrel Race. Instead they will donate their winnings to the charity of their choice.

Last years winner was Roger Roach of Numeralla riding Candy. Roger donated his winnings to the MCCR.

Ray Freebody Memorial Bronc Ride

Ray Freebody was a well known and respected member of the community. Ray had a profound influence on several members of the rodeo family. He was a great influence on his son David and travelled to as many rodeos as he could to watch and support him. He became a great friend to many cowboys and cowgirls. His happy face and kind words could always be counted upon.

After Ray passed away, his family decided to pay tribute to his love of the sport by creating the Ray Freebody Memorial Bronc Ride. Now in its seventh year, the Memorial is as hotly contested as any Bronc Ride in the Country, with cowboys vying for the prestige of being crowned the winner.  In 2010 there will be several past National Champions throwing their hat into the ring.
